This one comes under the catagory of funny LATER. Our units were on an operation in the Go Cong Province and there
was a lot of activity going on at the local soccer field, which was being used as a helo pad to pick up at lot of POWs from the recent operation. Anyway,
myself , and a # of GIs from the 9th were there along with a smattering of S Viets and civilians. Was passing by a ARVN soldier who had his M1 rifle under his
arm with an unshealthed bayonet, when the soldier offered me a sip of some rice wine he was sipping on. Had a big smile on his face as he apparently was
celebrating from the recent operation when he offered me a sip of his wine. Turned him down without hardly slowing down at all. Almost immediately his
contenance seemed to darken as he once again offered me a sip. Turned him down again only this time I took the time to say no with a no but thanks anyways. By
this time his scowl had become very dark as if my refusal had insulted him somehow. Once more he offered the wine but this time he positioned his body to make
the bayonet on his rifle to point at my throat while he made sure I knew he would be very unhappy if I turned him down this time. With a big smile, I took the
bowl of wine from him gulped it down as I replied " now I understand, you just didn't explain it right'

Hey Larry, sorry I got a late read on this!
In 1969 my third year on a four year tour, as a form of discipline I was moved from my position as a Civil Affairs Team leader at a MACV team in III CORPS, alone without a team to HOA LAC MACV District team GO CONG Province in IV CORPS the DELTA.
I was briefed and posted by a guy I had vaguely heard of but wasn't to impressed with (THEN) a Civilian who was running the DELTA at the time "John Paul Vann" I was a ninth grade drop out, and somebody made the decision to put me in charge of reclaiming Rice paddies flooded with sea water when the VC blew a dike at a little hamlet Hoa Lac at a point where the Sea met the whatever the name was of the tributary running past. In my opinion from a forty year cushion, they might as well have had me plotting the trajectory of the man on the moon rocket! I was completely lost! But being a US Army NCO in good standing I just charged on!
There are a couple of good stories from Go Cong when I get around to writing them one about Rice Wine. Bac Si De
Got a chuckle from your story bout explaining it right!

Art yea I have few more stories about Go Cong myself. John Paul Vann Was he as important as the young Navy Dr that processed
thousands of N. Viet refugees who were fleeing from Uncle Ho's unwelcome arms. Funny how time can distort some real heros and we remember things that are
not important.

I was sort of impressed by Vann's record. I still have questions about how he died.
He was no "Knight in shinning armor," but I think he was trying to get some truth out.

This was supposed to be a funny but brought back some unexpected memories. The operation near the city of Go Cong wwhere this
incident happened was the next operation after a bloody operation on our part only a short time b4. We lost a lot of good men in the previous battle but just
plugged in the replacements and kept on going to the next operation. I was just support for the grunts and didn't think too much about the grunts having to
get their selves together on the fly until much later.
