Bad Kissingen, Germany. Christmas time 1960 ... or 61 not sure anymore.
I was working the Military Police Desk, Curfew (0001), had come and gone Bars were cleared out should be quiet now.
Get a radio call from the one patrol out on the road, he had managed to get his 1/4 ton jeep stuck on a fire trail and needed assistance, damn! what the hell's he doing off road?, not unusual though, everybody did it including me.
Swing shift still hanging around playing cards, sent a couple a guys out after the first.
About an hour later, radio say's both now stuck.
Sent a 3/4 ton with tow chain, heaver should be able to pull em out.
Not to much later, radio again all three stuck.
Called the motor pool to send a wrecker, now will have to make a report.
Not to much later, radio again! all four stuck.
Called the other motor pool on post, managed to barrow another wrecker, getting close to a serious incident report.
Not to much later, radio again! you guessed it, all stuck.
Called post duty officer, to get a Tank Retriever, got the VTR and the duty officer out to the scene and they got mired too!
Suns coming up, the 14th Armored Cavalry sending two M60 tanks out, these have to be escorted by MP's by this time the whole MP detachment is involved, Capt's pissed, Platoon Sgt's pissed, I'm pissed .
Finally get them all unstuck with tremendous damage to the German trails that would have to be paid for, about a half million dollars worth of US army vehicles.
When the original patrolman got back to the MP station he called me out back to his jeep where he showed me a three foot Christmas tree for the MP station hidden under the back seat. He had just cut it when he got stuck.
